Metro Railway notice, 8 October 2026; check the official notice before relying on a late train. The Orange Line (Kavi Subhash to Beleghata, including VIP Bazar) has no service from 17 to 21 October 2026, so do not plan to finish there on a Puja night.
How to pandal hop in Kolkata
- 1
Pick one area per evening
Kolkata's pandals sit in 21 walkable clusters. Crossing from north to south costs an hour you will not get back. Choose a cluster, start at its metro station, and walk.
- 2
Go early or go late
Queues at the headline pandals run 45 to 90 minutes between 6 pm and 10 pm on Ashtami and Navami. Before 5 pm, or after 11 pm, you walk in. Chaturthi and Panchami evenings have every pandal lit and a fraction of the crowd.
- 3
Take the metro, not a cab
Roads around big pandals close to cars and taxis crawl. Metro Railway's Puja timetable (notice of 8 October 2026) runs the Blue Line from 1 pm to 4 am the next morning and the Green Line from 1:30 pm to about 4 am on 17 to 20 October, Shashthi to Navami; the Orange Line (Kavi Subhash to Beleghata, VIP Bazar included) has no service from 17 to 21 October. Stations have toilets inside the paid area. Our pages list the pandals near each station.
- 4
Follow the barricades
Lanes are one-way for pedestrians on Puja nights, with separate entry and exit. Police may send you round a longer way; it is faster than arguing. Keep bags small and water on you.
- 5
Know the numbers
Crowds can be dangerous. Follow police, volunteers and committee marshals, and never push against a one-way crowd flow. Emergencies: dial 112 (all services), 100 (police) or 102 (ambulance). Agree a meeting point before you enter a big pandal, and remember that routes, walking minutes and queue estimates are our best guesses and will be wrong on some nights.
- 6
Let the planner do the sequencing
Tell it where you are, how long you have and what you like. It orders the pandals so you walk less and queue less, warns you when to leave each one, and re-plans if you fall behind. Tap the first stop, go, and come back for the next.
- 7
Eat once, properly
Graze on rolls and phuchka near the pandals, then sit down once: the north Kolkata cabins, a Bengali kitchen in the south, or Park Street and Park Circus late. Our food page lists the famous ones with what to order.
Start with an area route, the pandals near your metro station, or the planner.
Durga Puja 2026 pandal hopping FAQ
- When is Durga Puja 2026?
- Durga Puja 2026 runs from Shashthi, Saturday 17 October, to Vijayadashami, Wednesday 21 October 2026, per the Kolkata panjika and the West Bengal government's 2026 holiday list (Maha Chaturthi 15 October to Dashami 21 October are state holidays). Mahalaya is Saturday 10 October. Most big Kolkata pandals open to visitors from Chaturthi (15 October), and the crowds peak on Ashtami (19 October) and Navami (20 October) nights.
- Why do some websites say Durga Puja 2026 is 16 to 20 October?
- They copy a pan-India panchang that lists each tithi from the day it begins, which falls a day earlier than the Kolkata panjika observed by the city's pujas and by the West Bengal government holiday notification. In Kolkata, Shashthi is Saturday 17 October and Dashami Wednesday 21 October 2026.
- দুর্গাপূজা ২০২৬ কবে? (Durga Puja 2026 dates in Bengali)
- What is pandal hopping? (pandal hopping meaning)
- Pandal hopping means walking (and occasionally riding) from one Durga Puja pandal to the next through the nights of the festival; in Bengali it is simply thakur dekha, 'seeing the goddess'. A pandal is the temporary structure, often an elaborate themed installation, that houses the idol; Kolkata has thousands, and a few hundred draw crowds from across the city. Pandal hopping is free; nobody charges for entry. In Mumbai and Pune the same word is used for Ganpati pandals; this site covers Durga Puja in Kolkata.
- How do I find Durga Puja pandals near me?
- Open the planner on the home page and tap 'Use my location': it lists the pandals within walking reach and builds a route from where you stand, without sending your location to us. If you would rather browse, the 'pandals near each metro station' pages list what is within about 1.5 km of every Kolkata Metro station, nearest first, with walking minutes.
- When do Kolkata pandals open to visitors in 2026?
- The headline pandals usually open to the public from Tritiya or Chaturthi (14 or 15 October 2026), a few of them earlier for previews; most neighbourhood pujas are lit from Panchami or Shashthi (16 or 17 October). Each committee announces its own opening day a few days before, so this site does not list per-pandal opening dates until they are confirmed. Chaturthi and Panchami evenings are the best time to see the big ones without the queue.
- How many pandals can you visit in one night?
- Four to eight is realistic in an evening: queues at headline pandals run 30 to 90 minutes at peak, and each stop takes 10 to 15 minutes inside. In a single walkable area with short queues you can do ten or more; across the city you will spend the night in traffic. The planner fits the number to the hours you give it.
- What is the best time of day for pandal hopping?
- Before 4 pm for daylight and short queues, or after about 1 am when the big queues thin out and the pandals stay lit until the early hours. The rush is roughly 7:30 pm to 11 pm, worst on Ashtami and Navami; Panchami and Shashthi weekday evenings are the quietest nights with everything open.
- Do I need a VIP pass for pandal hopping?
- No. Entry to every pandal is free. The 'VIP' or 'pandal passes' sold online are private queue-skipping products from tour operators, not tickets; some clubs also issue their own passes to members and sponsors. Pandal Hoppings does not sell or endorse passes; it plans routes that avoid the worst queues instead.
- North Kolkata or south Kolkata pandal hopping, which is better?
- Different things. North Kolkata (Bagbazar, Kumartuli, Shobhabazar, Hatibagan, College Street) is the old city: heritage bonedi bari pujas in courtyards, narrow lanes, the potters' quarter and the old cabins and sweet shops. South Kolkata (Gariahat, Ballygunge, Rashbehari, Jodhpur Park, Behala) is where the big theme pandals and the longest queues are. Most people do one of each on different nights.
- What is a bonedi bari puja?
- A Durga Puja held by an old aristocratic family in the thakur dalan (pillared courtyard) of its ancestral house, some of them running for 200 to 300 years: the Shobhabazar Rajbari, the Daw and Mullick houses in north Kolkata, Sabarna Roy Choudhury's in Barisha. They are quieter than the club pujas, best seen by day during the rituals, and most welcome visitors.
- Is pandal hopping free?
- Yes. Entry to every pandal is free; some have a separate quicker line for people with a pass from the club, but the public line is free and everyone gets in. You pay only for transport, food and the odd pay-and-use toilet.
- Does the Kolkata Metro run all night during Durga Puja 2026?
- Yes, on the Blue and Green Lines, per Metro Railway's notice of 8 October 2026. On 17 to 20 October (Shashthi to Navami) the Blue Line (Dakshineswar to Kavi Subhash) runs from 1 pm to 4 am the next morning, with a train every 6 minutes at peak, and the Green Line from 1:30 pm to 3:59 am. The Yellow and Purple Lines run from 3 pm until about 11 pm, so they are not all-night, and the Orange Line (Kavi Subhash to Beleghata, including VIP Bazar) has no service at all from 17 to 21 October. On 15 and 16 October every line keeps daytime hours (Blue and Green 6 am to 11 pm); on Dashami, 21 October, the Blue Line runs 1 pm to 10:30 pm and the Green Line 1:30 pm to 10:30 pm. Check the official notice before relying on a late train, and plan to finish near a Blue or Green Line station.
- How do I go from north Kolkata to south Kolkata in one night?
- On the Blue Line, which runs the city's spine: Shobhabazar Sutanuti, Shyambazar and Girish Park for the north; Kalighat, Jatin Das Park and Rabindra Sarobar for the south. Walk within each cluster and ride between them. Even so, one cluster per night sees more pandals than two.
- What is 'Puja Parikrama' and is this site the same thing?
- No. Puja Parikrama (pujo porikroma, Bengali for 'going round the pujas') is the name the West Bengal Transport Corporation and WB Tourism use for their ticketed Durga Puja bus tours, which run on fixed routes with fixed pickups. Pandal Hoppings is a free, independent planner for doing the round on foot and by metro, from wherever you are; it does not sell tours or tickets.
- दुर्गा पूजा 2026 कोलकाता की तारीख और मेट्रो (Hindi)
- What should I carry for pandal hopping, and is it safe at night?
- Water, a power bank, small cash for toilets and rolls, and flat shoes; leave big bags at home because the entry lanes are narrow. Nights are crowded but policed heavily (Kolkata Police deploys thousands of personnel every Puja evening) and families, including women in groups, hop until 3 or 4 am; keep to the lit main lanes, agree a meeting point before you enter a big pandal, and use the metro or an app cab for the last leg home.
- Is Durga Puja in Kolkata a UNESCO heritage event?
- Yes. 'Durga Puja in Kolkata' was inscribed on UNESCO's Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in December 2021. The city hosts roughly three thousand community pujas; a few hundred draw crowds from across the city, and this site routes through the ones worth the walk.
- Which pandals have the longest queues?
- The headline theme pujas: Sreebhumi Sporting Club, Santosh Mitra Square, Suruchi Sangha, Deshapriya Park, Tridhara, Ekdalia Evergreen, Ballygunge Cultural, Chetla Agrani, Naktala Udayan Sangha, Behala Nutan Dal and Barisha Club among them, with 45 to 90 minutes at peak. Each pandal page on this site gives its typical peak queue; the planner's less-crowd mode avoids them.
- Where are public toilets during pandal hopping?
- 34 permanent public toilets are mapped on this site, by area: KMC pay-and-use and Sulabh complexes, toilets inside metro stations, and ones in parks and markets. Big pandals add bio-toilets along the exit lane for the Puja days.
- Can I plan a route from where I am standing right now?
- Yes. The planner takes your location (or a metro station or pandal you name), how long you have and what kind of pujas you want, and gives you the next pandal and the ones after it, with walking minutes and when to leave. It re-plans if you fall behind. No sign-up and nothing to install; it works in the browser on any phone, and keeps working offline once you have opened it, which matters when the network falls over outside a big pandal.
- Is there a Durga Puja carnival on Red Road in 2026?
- No. The West Bengal government has called off the Red Road immersion carnival for 2026, and organisers have been told not to block roads for processions. Immersions go straight from the pandals to the ghats from Dashami, Wednesday 21 October. Check the official notice if you were planning a day around it.
- Is this an official Durga Puja guide?
- No. Pandal Hoppings is an independent, free guide. Pandal positions come from OpenStreetMap, Wikimedia Commons and Wikidata and are checked by hand; queue and crowd estimates are ours and will be wrong on some nights. Follow police and volunteer directions over anything on this site.
